How To Write Poetry

 by: Steve Gillman

If you want to know how to write poetry, the first thing you have to do is write some. It doesn't matter how it turns out. Your own mistakes will become your teachers. Your own writing will motivate you to greater creativity. Now, once you start the process, how do you improve it? Here are three tips.

1. Use nouns and verbs more than adjectives. Which is stronger: "She was as beautiful as a flower..." or "Roses wilted in shame as she passed by..."? "He looked at the depressing clouds..." or "He watched as dark clouds moved in, covering his sky..."?

2. Don't tell the reader how to feel. Let the words elicit the emotions directly, without explaining. "The tragedy touched them all," is more touching to the reader as "Men and women, doctor and workman... thirteen people looked upon the scene... with tears in their eyes."

3. Use dramatic and emotional words. Not all words are equal in their ability to "grab" a reader or elicit emotion. "Fell," "take," and "love," will probably be weaker than "plunged," "siezed," and "worship."

Look at the following lines, written two ways. The second way applies the three rules above. (From the poem "Gratitude.")

1.

The mountains and lakes were beautiful

I looked at them, heard them and smelled them

And I felt in awe

2.

Mountains stand against the sky

My little lake at their feet

And in the middle of this creation

Which I see with my eyes

Hear with my ears

Smell and taste...

Words fail, as they should

I hope you agree that the second version is better. Again, if you want to know how to write poetry, you have to start writing. Use these and other rules to help you, but remember that all rules in poetry need to be broken at times. Read your poems aloud to yourself and others as a final "test."

The Benefit of a GPS System

The Benefit of a GPS System

 by: Donald Buske

What benefit will you get from GPS?

Global Positioning System is a navigational aid, funded and controlled by the U.S.

Department of Defense. Since GPS systems utilize 24 satellites that orbit the earth

in a grid pattern, there are always six to eight satellites that are able to

communicate with any given position on earth at any given time. What this does is

give the average consumer the power to find any place on earth at any time day or

night. Just think of the benefits this provides for a wide variety of the public.

Some of the benefits we might receive from GPS are:

Fuel economy: If you want to maximize your fuel economy you'll need a good

GPS system. Saving money at the pump as well as wear and tear on your vehicle

should be one of the main reasons why you would want a good GPS system in your

vehicle. Accurate driving directions not only will...

Hello from Rochester: The CAT - An Awesome Beast

Hello from Rochester: The CAT - An Awesome Beast

 by: Susanne Pacher

For a while now I have been dreaming of taking the recently re-introduced high-speed ferry service from Toronto to Rochester. The ferry service briefly ran last year, introduced by a group of private investors, but stopped running after a few weeks due to financial difficulties. It was reintroduced this year after the City of Rochester purchased the ferry at an auction and contracted an experienced ferry service based out of Nova Scotia to run it.

North America's newest CAT fast ferry is an amazing vessel. Built in Australia in 2003, it made its way around the globe to its new home on Lake Ontario in 2005. It's as long as a football field and can also reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers or 52 miles an hour. The CAT can carry up to 774 passengers and 220 cars, and is one of the fastest and largest car ferries in North America.

It's a sharp-looking ship and its aerodynamic...

Mountain Cabin Vacations

Mountain Cabin Vacations

 by: Ric Wiley

Forget a motel, forget an RV you have not had the best vacation you have ever had until you have stayed in a Mountain Cabin.

Mountain Cabin Vacation

Mountain cabins are usually found in the best locations situated in beautiful mountain settings and range from brand new to rustic charm. What more could you want from your mountain cabin.

You may be thinking rustic charm may mean old fashioned but today many mountain cabins are fully equipped with all the latest mod cons such as wonderful log fires, hot tubs, cable TV and fully equipped kitchens. One of the best features though of a mountain cabin, is unsurprisingly, the mountains. I suppose that goes without saying that you would expect mountains next to a mountain cabin, after all it seems sensible, but until you have visited some of the best places to vacation in the US you may not have been to the mountains before and boy are you missing...

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe: Leaning Towards Safety

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe: Leaning Towards Safety

 by: Joe Thompson

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe has been designed and crafted by Chevrolet the automobile manufacturer with family safety in mind. Just like any other vehicle from Chevrolet, the 2007 Tahoe has made it a point to be able to perform well as well as provide safety before a crash, during a crash, as well as after a crash. This vehicle comes in three trim levels that comprise of the LS, the LT, and the LTZ.

The 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the first creations of General Motors as per new full size sport utility vehicles. The interior layout of this vehicle is quite symmetrical and very engaging. It also incorporates a build quality that is vastly superior to any other previous vehicles crafted by the company. The vehicle had dropped off the hard plastic trim framing controls and put in its place modern and cohesive construction that provides and exudes a more European look. The new interior...

Exploring Downtown Orlando - A Beautiful Walk Around Lake Eola

Exploring Downtown Orlando - A Beautiful Walk Around Lake Eola

 by: Susanne Pacher

After our interesting visits to the Orange County Regional History Center and the Well's Built Museum of African-American Culture and History, we decided to continue our explorations of downtown Orlando and its surrounding historic neighbourhoods. After driving through beautiful residential areas, framed by majestic oak trees adorned by Spanish Moss, we decided to take a stroll around beautiful Lake Eola, which is just minutes from downtown's Heritage Square, home of the Orange County Regional History Center, and every second, third and fourth Saturday of the month is also home to a lively farmer's market. By this time, the sun was starting to set and Lake Eola and the surrounding highrises were bathed in the golden hues of sunset.

Lake Eola is one of Orlando's more than 300 lakes and is surrounded by established residential areas and highrises ringing the downtown...

Beautiful Lake Garda Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda Italy

 by: Christopher Panduro

The crystal clear waters of Lake Garda are perfect for swimming and many popular sports such as windsurfing and sailing. The local climate is softened by the presence of this large body of water, which makes it comfortable for exploring the towns and villages on and close to the lake towns such as Garda, Lazise, Sirmione, Torri del Benaco Bardolino, Limone and Peschiera which are wonderful places to visit with a great choice of hotels, villas and Holiday homes or just for wandering around the cobbled streets filled with shops, hotels and restaurants and are home to bustling lakeside markets.

Do visit the old port of Torbole, the charming old streets of Limone and the castle and Roman Villa in Sirmione. From Malcesine you can take a cable car onto Monte Baldo for some mountain walking and superb views. Walks on the lake shore from Lazie or Bardolino also help to work up an appetite. On the southern...

Srinagar? City of Dal Lake

Srinagar? City of Dal Lake

 by: Aadil Mukhtar

If you've longed for the delights of a houseboat holiday, now is the time to try one out.

Srinagar is a unique city because of its lakes - the Dal, Nigeen and Anchar. The River Jehlum also flows through a part of the city.

The Dal, Srinagar's largest lake, has the most number of houseboats, followed by the Nigeen and the Jehlum.

As a general rule, houseboats in the Dal are of all categories, from deluxe through to D class, while those in the Nigeen are largely luxury class and those in the Jehlum largely economy class. This, however, is a generalization.

Most houseboats on the Nigeen and the Jehlum are situated on the banks of the lake, and can be accessed directly from land without the help of a shikara, while all those on the Dal require a shikara to get to and from them.

Most houseboats on the Dal are situated in long straggling rows; some face the Boulevard, Srinagar's most...
